Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area located near Thekkady in the districts of Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is renowned as both an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The protected area spans 925 square kilometers (357 square miles). In 1982, 305 square kilometers (118 square miles) of the core zone were designated as Periyar National Park. The park is a haven for rare, endemic, and endangered flora and fauna and serves as the primary watershed for two significant rivers in Kerala, the Periyar and the Pamba. Often referred to as the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady, the park is situated high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the southern Western Ghats, near the border with Tamil Nadu. It is located 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from Kumily, approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of Kottayam, 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of Madurai, and 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of Kochi.
